A number of press outlets are reporting on comments by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that Social Security reform is "off the table." Given the President's flaccid discussion of Social Security in the SOTU I don't really doubt that conclusion, but it's worth bearing in mind what Reid actually ruled out: "privatizing or eliminating" the program, which to most readers would leave a fair amount of policy options on the table. (E.g., do the recommendations of the President's fiscal commission fit under "privatizing or eliminating"? If proposed by a GOP Member of Congress they probably would, but given they came from the President's own appointees I'm hoping they'd get a pass.)
