The Congressional Budget Office has released a new analysis of rising claims for Social Security disability insurance (DI). The paper has a particularly helpful run-down of the long list of factors that contribute to the increase in disability claims, ranging from the aging of the population, to looser eligibility standards, to declining wages for low earners. A very good summary of the issues and literature on the subject. Also see a blog post on the paper by CBO director Doug Elmendorf.
